As an extension of the compassionate ministry of Jesus, ministers of care go forth from the Eucharistic celebration so that they may share the Word of God and holy Communion with those who are sick and cannot attend Sunday Mass. The Catholic Handbook for Visiting the Sick and Homebound compiles in one place all the rites a lay minister needs to perform this ministry with great care and sensitivity. The rites have been adapted for lay ministers and include those for sharing holy Communion and Viaticum, visiting the sick, blessing the sick and those who suffer, and praying with those who are dying. The Gospel texts for Year C, explanations of the readings, and a list of patron saints for those who are sick and suffering are also included in this resource, allowing ministers to more easily bring the Sunday Gospel to those in need. The 2025 edition includes the new translation of the rites from Holy Communion and Worship of the Eucharistic Mystery outside Mass.

“As a lay minister, this book makes it easy to pray. Many families and friends found strength in the power of prayer and felt the accompaniment of the Church.”
— Elizabeth Ramirez Director for Hospital Ministry Archdiocese of San Antonio, Texas

“An excellent resource for our ministers to the sick! Well-organized, helpful, and compassionate, the Handbook equips ministers of care to know what to do, why they are doing it, and how to be a sign of Christ’s hope and love for those who need it most.”
— Christine A. Gerety, phd Director of Spiritual Care and Engagement St. Monica Catholic Community Santa Monica, California

“This is a great resource—the rites, readings, and nuts and bolts of the ministry are all in one helpful guide. The introduction provides a powerful reminder to us about the beauty and responsibility the minister has in serving as a sign and bridge to Christ for those who are ill.”
— Laurie Coffee Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion Volunteer, Samaritan House (Comfort Care Home for the Dying) St. Peter’s Catholic Church Wellsboro, Pennsylvania
