In Nurturing the Whole Child: Montessori Principles Applied to the Catechesis of Children, Gianna Gobbi draws on a lifetime of experience with children, having apprenticed with educator Dr. Maria Montessori, and collaborated with biblical scholar Sofia Cavalletti to develop the Catechesis of the Good Shepherd (CGS). With a deep understanding of the way children hear God speak to them personally and with profound simplicity, Gobbi explains how Montessori principles are practically applied with children in the context of religious formation. This work is the fruit of entering gently and respectfully into the child's joyful encounter with the mystery of God's silent self-revelation made tangible through ancient biblical images, liturgical signs, and celebrations. Originally presented in Italian as a series of lectures for the formation of catechists in CGS, “la dispenza di Gianna” has been translated in English and edited for publication. This book is an important addition to the CGS library and a valuable reference in the formation of catechists in CGS. Parents of young children attending the CGS atrium will also find this book an informative resource on the nature of children and their prayer life.

“In these pages, Gianna Gobbi gives us the incredible gift of her experience with children as she presents the philosophy behind the Catechesis of the Good Shepherd (CGS) and the development of the inner spiritual resources of the catechist in service of the child. For all catechists, especially those in CGS, it is worth reading. This book has been life changing for me!”
— Mary Mirrione National Director The United States Association of the Catechesis of the Good Shepherd Scottsdale, Arizona

“As a colleague to Sofia Cavalletti, Gianna Gobbi, who was an experienced Montessori guide and educator, offered insights into the capabilities of young children that shaped how the Christian themes of the Catechesis of the Good Shepherd could best be offered to children. Nurturing the Whole Child captures Gianna’s voice and experience and gives readers a perspective into Maria Montessori’s principles of education and human development. This foundational text, used in Level I CGS catechist formation, opens the adult’s eyes to the richness and potential of children’s religious life.”
— Karen Maxwell Director of Formation The United States Association of the Catechesis of the Good Shepherd Marietta, Georgia

“I am delighted at the release of the new edition of this precious book. Once again, catechists will absorb Gianna’s wisdom and exquisite insights on the developmental and religious sensitivities of the young child. They will also be reminded of how, in the specially prepared environment known as the atrium, the adult can nurture a flourishing relationship between the child and God. From pragmatic help for welcoming children on their first day in the atrium to presenting key Montessori principles, Gianna offers all in a lucid and straightforward style. This long anticipated new edition will continue to assist catechists to confidently and humbly serve the child who falls in love—and stays in love—with God.”
— Marty O’Bryan CGS Catechist and Formation Leader St. Gregory Catholic parish Phoenix, Arizona

Nurturing the Whole Child is an excellent guide for understanding what the following means: Who is the child? What are the child’s developmental needs and capacities? What appropriate assistance can adults give? In this book, Gianna provides context for the foundations of the Catechesis of the Good Shepherd, which are the Montessori principles of education. She provides direction on how to construct a prepared environment where children find freedom to develop a relationship with God on their own. A must read for all who desire to serve as catechists in Catechesis of the Good Shepherd! For parents, grandparents, and all adults who wish to nurture the religious life of a child, this book will not only change the way you think about your child’s faith formation, but your own religious life, too!”
— Lynne Worthington CGS Catechist and Formation Leader Our Lady of LaSalette Parish Canton, Georgia
