The period of the catechumenate is focused on helping new disciples understand the doctrines and precepts of the Church in a way that flows from the liturgy. This period imbues catechumens with a spirit of prayer and service as catechists guide them to a deeper relationship with Christ.
Catechetical Sessions for the Catechumenate provides models and suggestions for leading catechumens through the many aspects of the Catholic faith, including fifty prayerful and theologically sound sessions to use when catechizing the unbaptized and the uncatechized. The sessions are organized in five categories: Beliefs, Catholic Living, Holy People, Prayer and Liturgy, and Sacraments, allowing the catechist to integrate doctrinal teachings into sessions in a prayerful and formative way that reflects the vision of the Order of Christian Initiation of Adults. This material can also be adapted to your parish’s unique needs, including to a year-round catechumenate model.
The sessions include:
Also included in this book is an organizational chart for scheduling the sessions according to the liturgical year.
With a helpful overview of the period of the catechumenate, and guidance for forming catechumens, this resource will help catechists and initiation team members share their faith, teach Catholic beliefs, and help catechumens live their developing faith as disciples of Christ.
“Catechetical Sessions for the Catechumenate is reflective of the Church’s vision for catechesis in the Order of Christian Initiation of Adults, which effectively restores the ancient relationship of liturgy and catechesis. This resource can be successfully used in a year-round catechumenate; flexible and easily adapted to Sundays and the liturgical seasons, the sessions are designed to both form and inform catechumens in a way of life based on the doctrinal and dogmatic precepts of the Catholic Church.”

Furthermore, this resource will be a welcome addition for classroom teachers and religious education instructors who recognize the need for authentic conversation and connection to lived experience. It is my sincere hope that Catechetical Sessions for the Catechumenate will be widely used to assist in the formation of hearts and minds for seasoned believers and seekers alike.”

“One of the greatest—if not the greatest—challenges of Christian initiation is to allow for a process that does not become another parish program. Catechetical Sessions for the Catechumenate meets that challenge with an incisive approach, which is rich in content, in prayer, and in Scripture citations. With stark clarity, each session asserts the essential role of the liturgy in the whole process and advocates engaging the community at large. This book is not only a guide for catechists, but also an invitation for the whole parish to be inspired and become involved in the wonderful mission of the baptized.”

The authors provide fifty sessions that will give catechumens a much-needed exposure to the Lectionary for Mass, The Roman Missal, Church documents, liturgical music, and ritual books that will enhance their metanoia experience.”

“Both prescriptive and flexible, this resource is a welcome addition to any parish Christian initiation team. We have here something tangible and approachable that takes the vision and goals of the catechumenate and translates them into concrete praxis and sound theological preparation for all-encompassing sessions. The catechist, both seasoned and new, will not only find this resource invaluable in planning the sessions, but will also feel inspired, honored, and cared for in their sharing in the parish’s initiation ministry.
