This stimulating collection of essays, edited by Robert L. Tuzik, provides a detailed analysis and commentary regarding the third typical edition of The Roman Missal. In addition to the purpose and methodology of the translation process, this resource reflects upon particular prayers and texts of the revised Missal. Through study and reflection, all will come to appreciate the virtues of the English translation found in the third typical edition of The Roman Missal.

From the Preface:

“On April 30, 2010 the Holy See announced recognitio or official approval of the English translation of the third typical edition of The Roman Missal. Many years were spent preparing this translation of The Roman Missal. In fact, it is the first major liturgical book to be issued since March 28, 2001, when the Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments (CDWDS) issued Liturgiam Authenticam: The Fifth Instruction on Vernacular Translation of the Roman Liturgy. . . . While no translation is perfect, I do believe that most people will find the translation of the liturgical texts in the third typical edition of The Roman Missal to be an improvement over the texts we had previously been using. It is important to remember that the norms under which the previous translation were composed and approved were different from the norms we currently have in place. After using the former texts for almost 40 years, we now have a better idea of what are qualities and values of the Roman tradition of prayer that we want to preserve in our English translation . . . . I am very grateful to the authors who have contributed to this book of essays.  I hope you find the contributions of these authors will assist you in exploring the many improvements that you will find in the third typical edition of The Roman Missal. I invite you to join me in praying for the successful implementation of the third typical edition of The Roman Missal, which will begin to be used in all the dioceses and religious institutions in the United States on the First Sunday of Advent, November 27, 2011”

--His Eminence Francis Cardinal George, OMI
