As Catholics, how are we called to make a difference in a world that can be difficult to understand? Every weekend, parishes across our global church welcome millions on their faith journeys to share joy, pain, fellowship, and understanding. Finding a way to guide congregations through economic, cultural, and political problems is critical. We may not know exactly how Jesus would have handled specific issues of today, but we can look to his actions, words, and spirit to give us guidance for challenging situations.

This resource provides a unique approach for understanding the important connection between the liturgy and the seven primary themes of Catholic social teaching. It will inspire you to deepen your relationship with God and with others, to become more aware of the needs of the world, and recommit yourself to live as Christ’s disciples in the world.

“In ministry I seek to warm those who shiver alone on the margins of society. At liturgy I gather in community to be warmed at the Christ-Fire: my faith rekindled, my spirit purified, my courage strengthened. Glorify the Lord by your Life is an important work that will inspire Catholic readers."
—Helen Prejean, CSJ Advocate for the Abolition of the Death Penalty Author, Dead Man Walking

"Bernard Evans’ book fills an unmet need--that Catholics gain a better knowledge of the Church’s social teaching and that they hear it preached more often at Sunday worship. In clear and engaging language, he provides a tour of Catholic social teaching arranged under seven themes. More than that, he shows how this teaching is front and center in the rituals and prayers of the Sunday Eucharistic celebration. Highly recommended for parish study groups and homilists. "
—Bob Hurd Liturgical Music Composer

"In Glorify the Lord by Your Life, Bernard Evans thoughtfully charts a pathway from Catholic social teaching and papal documents to Catholic worship practice. In thinking more deeply about creative ways for ongoing Christian discipleship, this book reminds us that liturgy rooted in social teaching transforms communal prayer into community action.
—Chris de Silva Liturgical Musician and Composer

"One of the glaring issues in Catholicism today is the disconnect between liturgy and life. Too often worship is experienced as a 'time out' from the routine and hardships of daily life rather than as a reframing of life according to the Paschal Mystery of Christ’s suffering, death, and resurrection. Bernard Evans provides the Church with an important corrective to this misdirected outlook. In Glorify the Lord by Your Life, Evans employs accessible language to demonstrate how Catholic social teaching on such things as human dignity, the preferential option for the poor, and the care of God’s creation is rooted in liturgical prayer. This book will serve as a very helpful source for parish adult education programs and could possibly find itself on the reading list of undergraduate courses on social ethics."
—Rev. Stphen S. Wilbricht, csc Associate Professor of Religious Studies Stonehill College Easton, MA

“Bernard Evans does an excellent job of summarizing over 100 years of Catholic Social Teaching and its connection to the liturgy. This is an excellent resource for parishes looking to challenge their parishioners to leave the Sunday Eucharist and ‘glorify the Lord by their lives.’”
—Stephen Palanca Director of Liturgy Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church Chicago, IL

"This book reminded me of what it means to be Catholic and to follow what is laid out for us in Catholic Social Teaching. Most importantly, Dr. Evans' book tied these important teachings to the liturgy and what we as Catholics recommit to every time we attend Mass, participate in the Eucharist and carry it out to the world we live in."
—Katherine Culligan Member of the Parish Council Holy Cross Church Portland, OR
