Rooted in Sacred Scripture, the words of the Mass are a wellspring for prayer, meditation, and contemplation. Reflecting more deeply on these liturgical texts provides the opportunity to enrich our experience of the Mass. In How Deep the Mystery, Sr. Joyce invites us to explore some of the common prayers we pray at Mass. She provides a structure that any reader can easily adapt for use with favorite texts from the Mass. This resource includes the following for each common prayer chosen:

• The official text from The Roman Missal

• Sr. Joyce’s reflection to help guide your personal reflection

• Two or three statements/questions to help facilitate your meditation and journaling

• A closing prayer

The celebration of the Holy Eucharist truly is “the source and summit of the Christian life” as Vatican II tells us (Lumen Gentium, no. 11). I am always moved by the Eucharistic celebration, that gathering of the Body of Christ wherein “we become what we receive” as Saint Augustine so wisely said. For the Church, this link between prayer and faith deserves deeper reflection. There is an ancient axiom which states: “lex orandi, lex credendi” which means “the rule of praying, is the rule of believing.” Our prayer is at the heart of our faith. As we pray, so we believe.

In How Deep the Mystery: Meditating on the Words of the Mass, Precious Blood Sister, Joyce Ann Zimmerman gives us a wonderful tool to help us pray more profoundly at the Eucharist, and thus believe more deeply. It is so easy for us to become distracted and inattentive. This gem of a book invites us to go deeper and to see the beautiful prayer of the Church in an entirely new light. She invites us into a richer appreciation of the Mass itself with its various Collects, as well as the Prefaces and Eucharistic Prayers. By engaging these all too familiar elements, we engage the deep mystery of the Christian life, in our source and summit.
